“I have learned that it’s not a bad idea to make a change in your career if you feel stagnant. Another lesson I’ve learned is that it’s a good thing to enjoy the people you work with. Finally, even more important than enjoying the people you work with is being open to learn from them. “
Welcome to our series about what makes Willory truly unique: our team. Without the people on the Willory team we would not be recognized as one of the top workplaces in Northeast Ohio and have grown so significantly in the last eight years.
Get to know Willory’s Client Relations Manager, Philip Major through his own words. If Philip’s words resonate with you and you want to join #TeamWillory, check out our Why Willory? page.
HOW DID YOU FIND WILLORY?
One of my former classmates (shout-out Hiram College) works at Willory! Since I live in Cleveland and worked in the staffing world and already knew the marketing manager, Willory was an easy find.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME YOUR FAVORITE TAKEAWAYS/STRONGEST DEVELOPMENTS FROM WORKING AT WILLORY?
When it comes to working at Willory I have learned about building relationships with coworkers through our virtual work environment in order to bring good business to clients. My favorite takeaway has been how Willory is structured to bring our team together as a family while not having a physical office.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT SEPARATES WILLORY FROM OTHER RECRUITING FIRMS?
I think personal connections and working together is what separates Willory from other firms. There is no divisiveness internally and always helping one another is a benefit to our clients and the HR and payroll professionals we work with.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE EVENT/CONFERENCE THAT WILLORY HAS BEEN A PART OF? IF SO, WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU?
DisruptHR has been my favorite event. What stood out to me the most is that all the things that were talked about by the speakers are the same things that Willory is proactively doing to help make HR departments meet their potential. Also, my presentation was well received by the CSHRM group which also stood out to me as a positive outcome.
WHAT ARE THE 3 MOST SIGNIFICANT LESSONS THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
I have learned that it’s not a bad idea to make a change in your career if you feel stagnant. Another lesson I’ve learned is that it’s a good thing to enjoy the people you work with. Finally, even more important than enjoying the people you work with is being open to learn from them.
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT WHILE WORKING AT THE FIRM?
My proudest accomplishment is, and continues to be, the “thank you” that I receive from a client. It sounds small, but as a client relations manager everything that I do on a daily basis is meant to lead to that one thing.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR ACADEMIC CAREER WHAT DID YOU LEARN THAT IMPACTED YOU THE MOST?
I learned to interpret through conversation rather than assumption. That has made a huge impact in both my working with colleagues and with clients.
HOW IS YOUR WORK LIFE BALANCE? WHAT DO YOU SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME DOING OUTSIDE OF WORKING AT WILLORY?
I enjoy my work life balance. I really like living in the heart of Cleveland where different events happen on a regular basis that my wife and I can be a part of whether that involves food, music, sports, or community engagement. While Cleveland is great, it’s always fun to travel outside of work as well!
